Second edition of International Conference on Alcoholism: Historical and Social Issues, Alba Iulia, Romania, 13 – 15 October 2010

On behalf of the Scientific and Organizing Committee, we are pleased to invite you to attend the second edition of Alcoholism: Historical and Social Issues, International Conference to be held between 13 – 15 of October 2010, in Alba Iulia, Romania.The organizers of this conference are Alba County Council, National Museum of Unification, Alba Iulia, Romania; “1 Decembrie 1918" University of Alba Iulia, Romania.

The aim of the conference is to bring together historians, sociologists, psychologists, and physicians from all over the world and to attract original papers on the following topics:

1. History of Alcoholism: history of production, distribution and consumption of alcohol
2. Social Issues of Alcoholism (social, cultural, psychological and medical aspects)

AMURG. Romanian Cremation Association + Famous Cremated Romanians (XXIX)

As I announced already, yesterday 16 of March 2010 Justice Court from Hunedoara approved the statutes and the existence of Amurg. Romanian Cremation Association. But We have to wait for a week to receive all the offical documents for the functioning of our association. So, I think from the next week we will start the registration action for the possible Amurg's members. Stay here with us for all the details regarding this!

Alfred Pagoni - composer, he died in the bombing of German Nazy avition on the Bucharest in August 1944, being cremated at Cenusa Crematorium in Bucharest

Alexandru Papana - aviator, died in Las Vegas in 1946, commiting suicide, he asked his ashes to be scattering from an airplane *I don't know if his wish was accomplished or not.

On 22 of March 2010 will take place a public presentation of both the Proceedings edited by us (Dying and Death, second edition and Alcoholism, first edition) at the National Museum of Unification from Alba Iulia. The Proceedings will be presented by PhD. Vasile Moga (principal researcher, National Museum of Unification from Alba Iulia - Alcoholism I) and PhD. Diana Campan (associate professor, "1 Decembrie 1918" University of Alba Iulia - Dying and Death II).

ESF

I submitted online an application to ESF. I'm the project leader of this and the principal investigators project are PhD. Zdenek Nespor (Czech Republic) and professor Eric Venbrux (The Netherlands). Let's hope we get this!

1. 16 of March 2010 is a historical day for us: Amurg. Romanian Cremation Association will be an official structure. I have to go to Hunedoara Justice Court for the final decision upon it but this decision is a favourable one.
2. Stefan Borbely, profesor at Babes Boylai University of Cluj Napoca, Romania, wrote in Apostrof journal a very good review upon the Proceedings of Dying and Death in 18th-21st century Europe, International Conference, second edition. I hope very soon I can post this review here. Many thanks to Adriana Teodorescu for this information.
3. We started to receive abstract proposal for the third edition of Dying and Death Conference. Until now we have receieved some such proposals for Poland, Italy, Hungary and Romania. Remember: the deadline for sending to us abstract proposals for this conference is 15 of May 2010.
4. This week the call for papers of the second edition of Alcoholism: Historical and Social Issues will send out. Stay here for this!

Mortality!!!

I tried for two times before to publish in this journal but both papers of mine was rejected by. But now they accepted my paper for publication. I'm so very happy with this. Finnaly the Proceedings of Alcoholism: Historical and Social Issues, International Conference, first edition, Alba Iulia, Romania, 28-29 of August 2009 were printed. These proceedings have 24 papers, 242 pages, ISBN 978-973-117-258-3 being published as supplement of Caiete de Antropologie Istorica journal (B+ CNCSIS).
Next week we will start to send these proceedings to all the contributors of it.

AMURG. Romanian Cremation Association

Having in my mind the idea that in a very short time Amurg. Romanian Cremation Association will be a functional structure for sustaining and promoting cremation in Romania I put here a picture of the interwar application for accesion for anyone to become member of Cenusa. Romanian Cremation Society (1937). This is a very important piece of what means a history of cremation in Romania and a very strong argument for us to restore the tradition of the interwar romanian cremationists.

AMURG. Romanian Cremation Association

Last week I met my friend and partner Cosmin Bodrean. We talked a lot about our plans to develop cremation in Romania. Due to the financial crisis in Romania we believe now it's hard to open a crematorium in Transylvania and we will try to develop a stronger system to take the bodies of the transylvanian romanians who want to be cremated to the Sgezed crematorium in Hungary. This is the first practical step for promoting cremation here. On the other hand, the best ideological tool for sustaining and promoting cremation here is our association AMURG. Romanian Cremation Association. In very short time we can facilitate to you to become member of our association. At the very first sight I think we will have about 30 members at the beginning of our asociation. In my opinion this is a very good begining having on my mind the fact that in 1923 when Cenusa. Romanian Cremation Society was founded this had just 14 members!
So, if you are interested to promote and sustain cremation in Romania come with us into the fire, becoming member of AMURG. Romanian Cremation Association!

Vitan Barzesti Crematorium in Bucharest

1. I was gone for couple of days to Bucharest trying again to see the archive of Cenusa and Vitan Barzesti crematoria in Bucharest. Unfortunately, in spite of the Adela Frecateanu's efforts, one of the lawyers of ACCU, to help me *(many thanks for your kindness, Adela!), I didn't succed to done it. I think the reason they refused me again with it is not to hide some secrets but just the bureaucracy of the employers of ACCU. Anyway they promised will permit me to see all these archives at my next visit at ACCU . I believe that in maximum 3 weeks I will be gone again to Bucharest for it.
Also, I was to Balaneanu cemetery in Bucharest searching for the grave of Mihai Popovici, one of the most important romanian cremationists, together with my friend Alexandru Murad Mironov from University of Bucharest. Unfortunately, we didn't find this grave.
2 I'm working with professor Eric Venbrux from University of Nijmegen, the Netherlands and my friend Zdenek Nespor, from Czech Academy of Sciences, Czech Republic for an application at a common project research with european funds. The topic of this research project is Cremations and Crematoria in 20th-21st century Europe: Between Western and Eastern European Issues of Cremation. My main problem is the fact is very hard to me to find others 5 researchers in Romania interested in cremation issues, exceepting myself!

Conference, Newpaper, Famous Cremated Romanians (XXVIII)

1. A very important information for all the possible participants at the conference:
If your abstract will be accepted for a presentation at our conference and you will book your flights to Cluj Napoca and Sibiu airport is our task to collect you from these airports and going to Pensiunea Ramet. We used to do this for the foreign participants at the previous edition of our conference. Don't book your flights to Bucharest airport because it is impossible for us to collect you from there and you have to come to Ramet on your own using trains and buses.
2. Sunday the Romanian newspaper Adevarul published an interesting paper on some of the problems in the death system of Romania of nowadays. 1. Conference
Saturday I was to the Pensiunea Ramet for visit it and for a conversation with the owners of this guesthouse. As I wrote in the call for papers of the conference the registration fee is FREE at our conference. This mean all the meals and bed for 4 nights for any participant at our conference.

Conference Proceedings 2010

It's very possible that the conference proceedings 2010 to be published as a supplement of the Annales Universitatis Apulensis Series Historica, the journal of History Department of "1 Decembrie 1918" Univerity of Alba Iulia.
I preferred this solution because this journal is indexed in CEEOL (Central and Eastern European Online Library - http://www.ceeol.com/ ) . You can read on-line the abstracts of this journal: (http://www.ceeol.com/aspx/publicationdetails.aspx?publicationid=d336af08-1fad-404b-bae8-9e973073c369 ).
After a meeting of the editorial board of this journal they will give me the answer for my proposal on Monday but they already told me there is not any problem for them to accept it. In my opinion this is one of the best solutions to improve the quality and the scientific level of the conference proceedings 2010.

Call for Papers: Third International Conference on Dying and Death in 18th-21st Century Europe:Refiguring Death Rites in Europe, Alba Iulia (Râmeţ), Romania, 3 – 5 September 2010.

On behalf of the Scientific and Organizing Committee, we are pleased to invite you to attend the third edition of Dying and Death in 18th-21st century Europe: Refiguring Death Rites in Europe, International Conference to be held between 3 – 5 of September 2010, in Alba Iulia (Râmeţ), Romania.

The organizers of this conference are: Romanian Association for Death Studies; The Refiguring Death Rites Research Group, Centre for Thanatology, Radboud University Nijmegen, The Netherlands; Ariodante Fabretti Foundation, Turin, Italy; Alba County Council, National Museum of Unification, Alba Iulia, Romania; “1 Decembrie 1918" University of Alba Iulia, Romania.

The aim of the conference is to bring together historians, sociologists, psychologists, and physicians from all over the Europe and to attract original papers on the following topics:

3. Bereavement in modern and post-modern society
4. Suicide, euthanasia and the law
5. End of life and palliative care

In 1938 following a plane crash occurred Lieutenant Colonel Waka Masakatsu, the military attache of the Embassy of Romania Japanese died. Lascar Viorel - painter. He died in 1918 being cremated in Germany but latter his ashes was buried at the Eternitatea Cemetery in Piatra Neamt.

1919

Mircea Zorileanu - pilot, one of the pionier of Romanian Aircraft. He died in 1919 at Genoa, Italy being cremated. In 1937 his urn became the foundation of a monument dedicated to his memory in Bucharest

Aetiu Hogas - one of the children of famous romanain writer Calistrat Hogas

Ion Pantazi - journalist. He died at Munich but his urn was buried at Ghencea Cemetery in Bucharest

Besides these persons there was an other very intersting case of the painter George Nasturel: he died very poor at the 96 age in United States. With the help of some orthodox romanian belivers from Los Angeles he was "saved" from cremation being inhumated!

Miti Dumitrescu's team composed by: Miti Dumitrescu (lawyer), Ion Ionescu (student), Ovidiu Isaia (photographer), Ion Moldoveanu (student), Gheorghe Paraschivescu (student), Cezar Popescu (student), Mihai Stanciulescu (worker mechanic), Traian Popescu (student) and Ioan Vasiliu (illustrator). They were members of Iron Guard a far-right movement and political party during the interwar period and having also a ultra-nationalist, fascist and antisemitic character. Miti Dumitrescu's team is responsible by the assassination of Armand Calinescu, prime minister of Romania on 21 of September 1939. For this fact, they were executed and their bodies were cremated at Cenusa Crematorium in Bucharest. Also in 1939 others Iron Guard's member cremated at Cenusa Crematorium in Bucarest: Vasile Cristescu, Nicoleta Nicolescu and Victor Dragomirescu and others unidentified until today.

Fischer Hogl - killed during the first anti-communist manifestation at Bucharest on 8 November 1945. His body was cremated at Cenusa Crematorium in Bucharest. It's very important the fact that some dead of this manifestation were cremated, too but their identity remained unknown until today.

Macavei Al Nicolae - employer of Siguranta Statului (the secret police) during the interwar period. He was killed embracing his daughter (4 years old!) by Securitate (the political police of Romanian Communist Party) in 1952. Their bodies were cremated at Cenusa Crematorium in Bucharest

2. Per Olof Ekstrom
Per Olof Ekstrom (1926-1981) was a very important swedish writer. His masterpiece is the novel Sommardanser (1949) which became One Summer of Happiness movie (1951), the movie winner of Golden Berlin Bear, Berlin International Film Festival (1952). After a long illness Per Olof Ekstrom died in Romania in 1981, being cremated at Cenusa Crematorium in Bucharest.
The romanian poet Florenta Albu described this moment in his diary, entitled Zidul Martor. Also, Florenta Albu was cremated latter, but all the time when I'm thinking to Florenta Albu I'm so very impressed by one of the title of her book, namely Shade Burnt. This title was like a premonition of her own's cremation!

PS. I'm so glad for my list of Famous Cremated Romanians. I hardly worked on this always having into my mind some famous words of soviet writer Maxim Gorky: "There are only two forms of life: decay and combustion. Cowards one will choose the first one, brave and generous people on the second! "

"Death has always been just a joke to me; life is my weakness"
Anthony Quinn (1915-2001)

One of the most lucid protests against death as an event and personal reality is found in the autobiographical novel, A Man Finished written by Giovanni Papini and published in 1913, at the age of 31. Entitled as simple as Death, the essay gives a very suggestive description of the fundamental anxieties of the modern society and namely the fear of death. Death, a subject which invites reflection and analysis par excellence, through the many mutations it produces, is a particular subject matter, often wrongfully given a secondary place among the scientific research interests. For this reason in particular, death cannot be considered the prerogative of just one science, although some may take a special interest in the topic. We cannot describe, understand, explain or come up with solutions to the reality of death without the joint effort of History, Philosophy, Sociology, Psychology, Medicine or Literature. Thus, the idea on which this conference was based, and which we would like to become a regular event, was that of multidisciplinary and of an open dialogue between researchers who are fond of this subject and who come from various academic communities. At a first glance, a conference organized in Romania exclusively on dying and death does not seem to be such a special thing, if we are to consider the world developments on the subject. However, the conference Dying and Death in 18-21 Centuries Europe was the first scientific event of this kind ever organised in Romania. The idea of this event was born some time ago, through scientific and friendship relations. The conference was organized by the Iuliu Maniu Centre for Historical and Political Studies of ‘1 Decembrie 1918’ University of Alba Iulia, the National Unification Museum, Alba Iulia, Romania, Ariodante Fabretti Foundation, Turin, Italy and with the support of the Alba County Council, the Local Council of Alba Iulia and Alba Iulia County Direction for Culture, Cults and National Heritage. Other partners of this event were the Historical Anthropology Seminary of ‘Babeș Bolylai’ University of Cluj Napoca, the Alba County Hospital and One TV. The conference was attended by experts of world fame in the field, coming from Italy, Great Britain, the Czech Republic, Poland, the Netherlands, the Republic of Moldova, France and Romania. Also, the Romanian National Research Council, CNCSIS, granted some of the funding through the type AT project, code 47 "Atitudini în faţa morţii; perspective asupra vieţii în România secolelor XIX-XXI” (Attitudes in front of Death; Perspectives on Life in Romania from the Nineteenth to the Twenty-First Centuries), project manager: Marius Rotar. There 10 were positive echoes to this event. The Romanian local and national media spoke of it, proving that the scope of the conference was achieved. This is the conference proceedings, containing most of the papers presented at the conference. Unfortunately, due to objective reasons, the papers by Glennys Howarth, Enrico Cazzaniga, Liana Don, and Nicolae Mihai were not included here. There were six conference sessions as the present volume reveals. Each of these papers was intended to be an original contribution to the topic of the conference, highlighting sensitive subjects, which called forth debates and polemics. Therefore, sensitive subjects for the Romanian society were considered, related to death, such as euthanasia, suicide and especially crematories. From this point of view, we believe that our intentions have been achieved and that the second edition of this conference, planned for the end of September 2009, will further the discussions and enlarge upon the subject. The members of the organizing team were Marina Sozzi, Marius Rotar, Corina
Rotar, Luca Prestia, Victor Tudor Roşu, Paul Nanu, Liviu Zgârciu and Rareş Diodiu. It is said that death, as an event, equalizes that which life differentiates and from this perspective, our intent is to continue and strengthen the dialogue and friendship that connect us. Likewise, it is said that poetry, as a situation, begins where it ends on paper. Thus, the image of death as reality offered by the Romanian poet Horia Furtună can be one of the symbols of this conference:

«Death is a slowly moving carriage,
Its wood creaks, its bones crack,
Its wheels grind,
It comes for all of us, one at a time!
For many years it has been passing by,
On dusty and stony roads
And it leaves slowly through mud,
on a causeway
To another realm.

A Happy New Year!

When I started this blog I strongly refused to make it as my diary . After 8 months of Romanian. Death. Cremation I'm proud by what became this blog: an easier way to keep in touch of death scholars in worldwide. This blog didn't represent just my contribution but a wider one of all the people who believed and sustained this project! Thank you very much! A Happy New Year for all of you!
I don't know if this picture is the proper one in order to express these lines from above but this photo is a very interesting one: one of the biggest problems of death system in Romania of nowadays is the crisis of burial places in urban area so this photo, taken in the Alba Iulia's cemetery, show us the real dimensions of this situation - a burial place between corns! Hallelujah!

One moment - three pictures at the Ceremony of Re-burial of Unknown Soldier at Bucharest (1923)

In 1923 it was organized a big ceremony for the eternal honor of the fallen Romanian soldier during the First World War. In the presence of the royal family of Romania the burial ceremony took place at Bucharest on 17th May 1923 and on the slab of the crypt were written: "Here lies at rest happily unto the Lord the Unknown Soldier, extinguished from life in the sacrifice for the unity of the Romanian people. On his bones lies the land of united Romania. 1916-1919".

The main aim of Romanian Association for Death Studies is to develop and to improve the quality of death studies in our country. Also, we try to keep alive the flames of Dying and Death in 18th-21srt Century Europe, International Conference! This is the only conference on death in Romania and also in this part of Europe! For all of these and other 1000 unspoken reasons I do need you by our side!

A Short Portrait of a Romanian Cremationist

It's about Radu D. Rosetti (1874-1964) - poet, one of the best authors of epigrams in Romanian literature, a famous lawyer during the interwar period and also author of some travel books. According to George Calinescu, Radu D. Rosetti used, in the last years of his life, to sleep with the urn on his night table, expressing in this manner his adhesion to cremation. With Constantin I. Istrati, Grigore Trancu-Iasi, Mihai (Max) Popovici, C. Comanescu, V.I. Zorca and few others, too RADU D. ROSETTI had been one of the most important romanian cremationists. Unfortunately surfing on net I haven't found until now any picture of Radu D. Rosetti and for this reason I posted it.

Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year!

I wish Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year to all members of our team, the participants of our conferences, the collaborators, the contributors of the conferences' proceedings and, also to our friends from Italy, UK, The Netherlands, USA, Canada, Poland, Czech Republic, Russian Federation, Serbia, Ireland, Australia, Germany, Hungary, Republic of Moldova and of course Romania. For us 2009 was a good year and we hope to go on and to improve our actions in 2010!
Like a card for celebration of all of these we can see here a picture of Cenusa Crematorium in Bucharest in 1930. In spite of the fact the building of this crematorium wasn't finished Romanian cremationists of those times performed cremation inside of. This is for me and I hope for all of you a stronger impulse to work for improving all I started through this project. Thank you very much! Sarbatori fericite!

Famous Cremated Romanians (XIX)

1948
Maria Giurgea - one of the most talented actress from the interwar period; due to some problems when she considered herself humiliated Maria Giurgea gave up to play at 48 age.

2000 ?
Ion Herdan - an excellent translator of some very important works for Romanian culture

2007
Isidore Isou (Ioan Isidor Goldstein) - Romanian/French poet and artist, the founder of Lettrism cultural movement. He died in France and his ashes are kept in Pere Lachaise Cemetery

2008
Ana Voindrouh, the younger sister of Romanian singer Nadine. Ana committed suicide at 29 age and she was cremated at Vitan Barzesti crematorium in Bucharest

2009
Mircea Constantiniu - the twin brother of the famous Romanian singer Cornel Constantiniu. Mircea Constantiniu, working for many years like graphics arts artist, suffered by cancer, died in South Africa where he was cremated, too. It's very interesting the fact that Cornel Constantiuniu public declared he felt some burns in his stomach during the cremation of his brother!

Also, there are two very interesting cases of some cremated non-Romanians but connected to Romania:
1. Amita Bhose - Indian writer, teacher and translator: she died in Romania in 1992 being cremated at Cenusa Crematorium in Bucharest but living and teaching for a long time here *she was the best translation in begali language of the most important Romanian poet Mihai Eminescu - his family decided to keep her urn in Bucharest
2. Hajime Hori - Japanese business man, died in 2006, bled to death after a dog bit on a Bucharest street. Hori was cremated in the presence of his son at Vitan-Barzesti Crematorium in Bucharest and his urn transported in his native country. This case produced a big scandal in Romania regarding the situation and the danger of the "vagabond" dogs on the street of Bucharest *see the "famous" debate for the euthanasia of this type of dogs.

Three Short arguments for RADS

1. The poorness of palliative cares: Today romanian newspaper Evenimentul Zilei published a very interesting paper about the situation of palliative care and hospice services in Romania: http://www.evz.ro/articole/detalii-articol/879986/Ghid-de-comunicare-a-vestilor-proaste/
For example just 95% from Romanians suffered by cancer died in pains. This is a stupid situation and must be changed!
2. The crisis of the burial places in urban area in Romania and the alternative of cremation!
3. The improvement of the death studies in Romania!
Our future association will encoure very strong the debates on the the first two topics and on others, too trying to influence the public politics upon death system in Romania! For this aim we need you by our side!

RADS + Famous Cremated Romanians (XVIII)

1. Yesterday I received by post from the Romanian Minister of Justice the approval for the validity of name for Romanian Association for Death Studies *Asociatia Romana de Studii asupra Mortii. Although there are some steps from the legal point of view for the official opening of RADS the first one of this and the most important steps had made until now. As we decided at the conference any possible member of RADS must pay for her/his registration 50 RON. Until now 10 persons have expressed their wish to become member of RADS. So, I think in January 2010 we will be able to make the first official registrations for RADS. Meanwhile I will post here, in short time, my proposal for RADS rules waiting for your comments and suggestions to improve it.

2. It's very possible that some papers from the Proceedings of Alcoholism: Historical and Social Issues, International Conference, to be re-published into The Social History of Alcohol and Drugs: An Interdisciplinary Journal (SHAD)http://historyofalcoholanddrugs.typepad.com/alcohol_and_drugs_history/description.html . My friend, Dan Malleck proposed to me this and we must select some from the proceedings' papers and also to find an English co-editor for it.
