A very important change with the conference
There is a very important change with the conference: due to the fact that the guesthouse where I intended to organize the conference cannot host all the participants, having also big problems with the room for meals, we decided to change the location of the Dying and Death III Conference from Ramet to Alba Iulia. We are about 74 participants, including here the organizing team! So, under these conditions all the participants at the conference will have their accomodation at Hotel Cetate in Alba Iulia. This is a good hotel. On Thursday the conference programme by time schedule will be sending out on this blog.

The first draft of the final programme of Dying and Death III
Here is the first draft of the final programme of Dying and Death III International Conference.
Of course there are possible many changes upon it. In few days I will post here the detailed final programme of the conference by chairmen, times, days, hours, locations, meals, official reception and also the entertaiment programme *by the way, we intend to organize a karaoke party and also to invite a band who play for us some traditional romanian music.

I came back from my vacation to Romania. We received many confirmations for conference's participation. I think in 10-12 days we can arrange the final programme of Dying and Death III conference posting it on this blog.
Also, in few days I will post here the accepted papers for second edition of Alcoholism: Historical and Social Issues, International Conference.

New Deadline for Your Confirmation
I will be gone for a week to Bulgaria at the Black Sea, taking my vacation together with my family *until 6 of August. For this reason I extented the deadline for your confirmation participation at Dying and Death III until 9th of August 2010.

Dying and Death in 18th-21st century Europe: Refiguring Death Rites in Europe, International Conference, third edition - Information for participants
1. Instructions for Authors
Romanian Authority for Scientific Research (ANCS) will grant some funds for organizing the third edition of Dying and Death in 18th-21st century Europe: Refiguring Death Rites in Europe, International Conference. Due to this fact we have to edit the conference proceedings latest 30 days after conference. As your presentation will be published in the conference proceedings I ask you to send it to us at marina.sozzi@fastwebnet.it; eric.venbrux@gmail.com; or mrotar2000@yahoo.com . The deadline for it is 16th of September 2010.
Here are the instructions for authors:
Papers are accepted only in English or French
Paper not exceeding 12,000 words
Please supply a short biographical note (50 words maximum) and information about your affiliation, postal address, and an email address.
Abstracts of not more than 200 words are required for all papers submitted.
Each paper should have 5 to 7 keywords
Style guidelines:
a).Page Format: B5, 2.5 cm above, below 2 cm, left 2 cm, right 2 cm, header1.5 cm, footnote 1 cm portrait (except annexes necessary to use type) edges in the mirror, align the left-right, a row spacing, indentation of first lines1.25 cm, without using the Tab key.
b. Recommended fonts: Times New Roman or Garamond (12 p. fortext p. 10 for footnotes and annexes 11 p. for summary).
c. The title should be written in capitals and centred, followed by the nameauthor's (right-aligned).
d. Running titile written in italics and centred 11 p., will contain the nameauthor's (on p. para) and the study title (possibly shortened, the odd page).Page number will be put underground and centred.
e. Summary will be placed at the end of the text and will be accompanied by a number of approx.
f. Annexes will be written in Word program under Windows, does not recognize textsent as image.
3. Illustration
Images must be of high quality jpg format., Bmp., Gif., Tiff. (Not allowed Xerox copies) and accompanied by explanations and sources of origin mentioning (Where applicable).
4. Drafting rules
a. Titles of books, studies, newspaper or magazine, mentioned in the text is written withitalics.
b. To draw up quotations are used bold, not italics,marking the opening of their being made in accordance with the rules of punctuation in English
When the author wants to emphasize a few wordsthe quotation, use italic characters, followed by mention of [national] or [nn].
For citations in classical languages will use italics, without quotation marks.
c. footnotes are permitted only (orders placed by using Insert Reference, footnote), generally prepared in accordance with Academy Romanian, noting that it will use abbreviations for further Citation sources / books / articles, and not 'op. cit..

Due to the larger numbers of the presentations we have to organize in the first day of the conference two parallel sections. The next two days of the conference will take place at Ramet.
All the participants will have their accomodation in Ramet during the conference(http://www.pensiunearamet.ro/ ). In the first day of the conference a bus will take the conference participants for going from Ramet to Alba Iulia (in the morning).

Dying and Death conference - abstract proposals' evalution
Wednesday at the latest we will finish the evalution of the abstract proposals received for the third edition of our conference Dying and Death in 18th-21st century Europe: Refiguring Death Rites in Europe which will be held at Ramet (Alba Iulia), between 3-5 of september 2010. After that in the same day I will post here on this blog the list of the accepted proposal for a presentation at our conference. So, stay here for news! Just a short notification for now: the majority of these abstract proposals have a high scientific level and these will be accepted at our conference!

Dying and Death III Conference - some news
I will attend at the Congres International d'etudes sur les Dances Macabre et l'art Macabre en General which will be held at Sibiu, Romania between 20 and 23 of May 2010. I will present a paper about the issues of cremation in Romania of nowadays. For this reason I have to postpone the evalution of the abstract proposals of the third edition of Dying and Death in 18th-21st century Europe, International Conference until the beginning of next week. We have received abstract proposal from 20 countries and this situation makes me to believe this edition of the conference will be the most extended edition on comparasion with the previous ones. Particulary I'm so very glad because the cremation topic of the conference will be covered very well. The most abstract proposals we received from Italy (9) and UK (6).
Also, Peter C. Jupp will attend at our conference but, unfortunately Tony Walter is not able to come because he is very busy. Hilary Grainger and Brian Parsons are also two very important researchers will come to Romania attending at the conference.

1. There are just two days until then you can send us abstract proposals for the third edition of Dying and Death in 18th-21st century Europe: Refiguring Death Rites in Europe, which will be held at Ramet (Alba Iulia), between 3-5 of September 2010. Until now we have received abstract proposals from researchers from 12 countries! I'm very happy because we will have participants from "new" countries at our conference (Ukraine, Germany, USA, Kosovo, New Zeeland, Bulgaria and maybe Turcia and Denmark)!

For the third edition of Dying and Death in 18th-21st century Europe: Refiguring Death Rites in Europe, International Conference *3-5 september 2010, Ramet, Alba Iulia, Romania* until now we have received abstract proposals from Italy, The Netherlands, UK, Republic of Moldavia, New Zeeland, USA, Kosovo, Bulgaria and Romania. Romanian Cremation Association as the new voice of Romanian Cremationist Movement will express an official position upon this law. Review
This is a review of the Proccedings of Dying and Death in 18th-21st century Europe, International Conference, second edition, published in Apostrof, a romanian cultural journal from Cluj Napoca: http://www.revista-apostrof.ro/articole.php?id=1102 *unfortunately this review is written in romanian language. The author, Stefan Borbely is a Professor at the Department of World and Comparative literature of The Faculty of Letters in Cluj, "Babes-Bolyai" University of Cluj Napoca, Romania. This is a very favorable review considering our conference a great succes but Stefan Borbely has doubts that romanian cultural authorities will support us in the future.

AMURG. Romanian Cremation Association + Famous Cremated Romanians (XXIX)
As I announced already, yesterday 16 of March 2010 Justice Court from Hunedoara approved the statutes and the existence of Amurg. Romanian Cremation Association. But We have to wait for a week to receive all the offical documents for the functioning of our association. So, I think from the next week we will start the registration action for the possible Amurg's members. Stay here with us for all the details regarding this!

The Proceedings will be presented by PhD. Vasile Moga (principal researcher, National Museum of Unification from Alba Iulia - Alcoholism I) and PhD. Diana Campan (associate professor, "1 Decembrie 1918" University of Alba Iulia - Dying and Death II).

Romanian Cremation Association will be an official structure. I have to go to Hunedoara Justice Court for the final decision upon it but this decision is a favourable one.

Stefan Borbely, profesor at Babes Boylai University of Cluj Napoca, Romania, wrote in Apostrof journal a very good review upon the Proceedings of Dying and Death in 18th-21st century Europe, International Conference, second edition. I hope very soon I can post this review here. Many thanks to Adriana Teodorescu for this information.

Mortality!!!

AMURG. Romanian Cremation Association
Having in my mind the idea that in a very short time Amurg. Romanian Cremation Association will be a functional structure for sustaining and promoting cremation in Romania I put here a picture of the interwar application for accesion for anyone to become member of Cenusa. Romanian Cremation Society (1937). This is a very important piece of what means a history of cremation in Romania and a very strong argument for us to restore the tradition of the interwar romanian cremationists.

AMURG. Romanian Cremation Association
Last week I met my friend and partner Cosmin Bodrean. We talked a lot about our plans to develop cremation in Romania. Due to the financial crisis in Romania we believe now it's hard to open a crematorium in Transylvania and we will try to develop a stronger system to take the bodies of the transylvanian romanians who want to be cremated to the Sgezed crematorium in Hungary. This is the first practical step for promoting cremation here. On the other hand, the best ideological tool for sustaining and promoting cremation here is our association AMURG. Romanian Cremation Association. In very short time we can facilitate to you to become member of our association. At the very first sight I think we will have about 30 members at the beginning of our asociation. In my opinion this is a very good begining having on my mind the fact that in 1923 when Cenusa. Romanian Cremation Society was founded this had just 14 members!
So, if you are interested to promote and sustain cremation in Romania come with us into the fire, becoming member of AMURG. Romanian Cremation Association!

Vitan Barzesti Crematorium in Bucharest
My friend Alexandru Murad Mironov searching for Mihai Popovici's grave in Balaneanu cemetery in Bucharest together with me!
Mihai Popovici's obituary published in Romania Libera newspaper in 19681. I was gone for couple of days to Bucharest trying again to see the archive of Cenusa and Vitan Barzesti crematoria in Bucharest. Unfortunately, in spite of the Adela Frecateanu's efforts, one of the lawyers of ACCU, to help me *(many thanks for your kindness, Adela!), I didn't succed to done it. I think the reason they refused me again with it is not to hide some secrets but just the bureaucracy of the employers of ACCU. Anyway they promised will permit me to see all these archives at my next visit at ACCU . I believe that in maximum 3 weeks I will be gone again to Bucharest for it.
Also, I was to Balaneanu cemetery in Bucharest searching for the grave of Mihai Popovici, one of the most important romanian cremationists, together with my friend Alexandru Murad Mironov from University of Bucharest. Unfortunately, we didn't find this grave.
2 I'm working with professor Eric Venbrux from University of Nijmegen, the Netherlands and my friend Zdenek Nespor, from Czech Academy of Sciences, Czech Republic for an application at a common project research with european funds. The topic of this research project is Cremations and Crematoria in 20th-21st century Europe: Between Western and Eastern European Issues of Cremation. My main problem is the fact is very hard to me to find others 5 researchers in Romania interested in cremation issues, exceepting myself!

Conference, Newpaper, Famous Cremated Romanians (XXVIII)
1. A very important information for all the possible participants at the conference:
If your abstract will be accepted for a presentation at our conference and you will book your flights to Cluj Napoca and Sibiu airport is our task to collect you from these airports and going to Pensiunea Ramet. We used to do this for the foreign participants at the previous edition of our conference. Don't book your flights to Bucharest airport because it is impossible for us to collect you from there and you have to come to Ramet on your own using trains and buses.
2. Sunday the Romanian newspaper Adevarul published an interesting paper on some of the problems in the death system of Romania of nowadays. Here is the link http://www.adevarul.ro/actualitate/social/inmormantare-Bucuresti-biserica-preoti-gropari_0_195580739.html It's about the prohibited prices for a burial in Bucharest.

1. Conference
Saturday I was to the Pensiunea Ramet for visit it and for a conversation with the owners of this guesthouse. As I wrote in the call for papers of the conference the registration fee is FREE at our conference. This mean all the meals and bed for 4 nights for any participant at our conference.
Please visit http://www.pensiunearamet.ro/Galerie/index.html to see some pictures of it. There is a very spectacular landscape over there due to the area mountains and Ramet monastery. Anyway we will take a dinner at the monastery.
2. Conference Proceedings 2010
These proceedings will be published as a supplement of Annales Universitatis Apulensis Series Historica, the journal of History Department of "1 Decembrie 1918" University of Alba Iulia. This is a journal indexed by CEEOL.

Conference Proceedings 2010
It's very possible that the conference proceedings 2010 to be published as a supplement of the Annales Universitatis Apulensis Series Historica, the journal of History Department of "1 Decembrie 1918" Univerity of Alba Iulia.
I preferred this solution because this journal is indexed in CEEOL (Central and Eastern European Online Library - http://www.ceeol.com/ ) . You can read on-line the abstracts of this journal: (http://www.ceeol.com/aspx/publicationdetails.aspx?publicationid=d336af08-1fad-404b-bae8-9e973073c369 ).
After a meeting of the editorial board of this journal they will give me the answer for my proposal on Monday but they already told me there is not any problem for them to accept it. In my opinion this is one of the best solutions to improve the quality and the scientific level of the conference proceedings 2010.

Call for Papers: Third International Conference on Dying and Death in 18th-21st Century Europe:Refiguring Death Rites in Europe, Alba Iulia (Râmeţ), Romania, 3 – 5 September 2010.
On behalf of the Scientific and Organizing Committee, we are pleased to invite you to attend the third edition of Dying and Death in 18th-21st century Europe: Refiguring Death Rites in Europe, International Conference to be held between 3 – 5 of September 2010, in Alba Iulia (Râmeţ), Romania.
The organizers of this conference are: Romanian Association for Death Studies; The Refiguring Death Rites Research Group, Centre for Thanatology, Radboud University Nijmegen, The Netherlands; Ariodante Fabretti Foundation, Turin, Italy; Alba County Council, National Museum of Unification, Alba Iulia, Romania; “1 Decembrie 1918" University of Alba Iulia, Romania.
The aim of the conference is to bring together historians, sociologists, psychologists, and physicians from all over the Europe and to attract original papers on the following topics:
1. Cultural history of death
2. New ritualisations of death in the 21st century
3. Bereavement in modern and post-modern society
4. Suicide, euthanasia and the law
5. End of life and palliative care

There are 30 km from Alba Iulia to Râmeţ. Also, Râmeţ monastery is one of the most famous Romanian orthodox monasteries. In 1938 following a plane crash occurred Lieutenant Colonel Waka Masakatsu, the military attache of the Embassy of Romania Japanese died. He was cremated at the Cenusa crematorium and urn ashes sent to Japan. You can see above a picture of his cremation ceremony occured at Cenusa Crematorium in Bucharest.
